School Committee · Meeting of October 28, 2026

NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport School Committee heard that the district received a $3.1 million capital grant to build new health and manufacturing career programs at the high school. Superintendent Sean Gallagher said construction on the Health Assisting and Engineering Manufacturing spaces is set to begin in June, with the two programs opening the following year. The committee also voted unanimously to give Superintendent Sean Gallagher a 3 percent retroactive salary increase.

The mayor told members that Northern Essex Community College President Lane Glenn had written that the college did not see "a path forward" working with Whittier Regional Vocational Technical School on a shared-campus model, while regional talks remain stuck on capital costs; Newburyport would pay about 11 percent of Whittier's capital projects while having just under 2 percent of its enrollment. Facilities Director James McSweeney presented a capital plan topped by high school masonry repairs and an estimated $1.4 million turf field replacement.
