NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport School Committee opened the school year by approving June minutes on a split vote and detailing a staffing shuffle to cover a new kindergarten section. The district reallocated roughly $70,000 rather than add new positions, moving an assistant principal from the Mullen School to the Bresnahan School and adding literacy specialist Dr. Abrams and former high school staffer Jim Antonelli to administrative roles at Mullen.
Superintendent said Bresnahan, with about 600 students and 142 staff, "reached a threshold" requiring support. High school senior Katie Seaton used public comment to press the district on supporting immigrant students after a local immigration enforcement action, prompting a new-business commitment to formalize written policy on law enforcement access to student records. Member Andrew Boger said the policy subcommittee's top priority this year is artificial intelligence policy developed through an ad hoc committee.
The minutes vote passed 3-0 with two abstentions among five members present.
